The dangling carrot. The offer that is just too good to refuse. However you want to say it, when someone is promising Pleasure, Profit, or Promotion – BEWARE!
It is my nature to sin and pursuing pleasure, profit, or promotion, are quick ways I can fall into sin. But there is one powerful resource that I can fall back on when discerning whether the things I am pursuing are in God’s will… scripture.
When Jesus was being tempted by the devil, he was promised food to satiate his hunger (pleasure) and authority to rule over all the world (power). But Jesus rebuked the devil’s temptations with God’s word.
When the devil offered Jesus the whole world, if only he would bow down and worship him. Jesus drew on God’s word, saying “It is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.”
While it may not be necessary to reference scripture when making simple decisions like what brand of orange-juice to purchase, when trying to discern God’s will in our pursuits, there is no better guide than the word of God itself.
The next time you are faced with making a decision, fall into the Word of God first; otherwise, you may fall straight into sin.
